A man with a big heart, Dr. Jose Chacko Periappuram would go on to change the lives of thousands of people with his amazing journey as a heart surgeon. A Humble Beginning
Dr. Jose Chacko Periappuram was born on April 28, 1958. His amazing ability and unwavering determination would soon change the world. Jose grew up in South Paravur, where he learned the importance of being humble and working hard. He began his education at the Government Medical College, Kottayam, and graduated in 1982 as a doctor.


A Dream Takes Flight
On the other hand, Dr. Periappuram was set on a different road that would take him to the very cutting edge of medical science. He went to Scotland, far away, because he had a dream to heal hearts. At the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow, he did postgraduate studies in cardiac surgery. He never stopped trying to be the best, and the experiences he got helped to shape his pioneering career.


The Trip Back to India
In 1989, Dr. Periappuram went back to his home country with a lot of knowledge and a strong desire to help. He ended up at the Lisie Hospital in Kochi, Kerala, on his journey. This is where he made a lot of important advances to the field of cardiac surgery. He gave his whole life to this school and, more importantly, to the many patients he would come to save for more than 30 years.


The Hands of Healing
It would take Dr. Periappuram over 10,000 heart surgeries to get his hands as steady as a surgeon’s should be. He wasn’t just good at routine treatments; he was one of the first doctors to use minimally invasive cardiac surgery, a method that reduces trauma and speeds up recovery. His kindness, not just his skill as a surgeon, was what made him stand out. He healed more than just hearts.


A Life of Helping Others
In addition to the amazing things he did in his work life, Dr. Periappuram also did amazing things for others. He knew that not all hearts could afford to get better, so he started the Heart Care Foundation. This charitable trust saved the lives of poor heart patients by giving them money and teaching them about heart diseases. Not only did Dr. Periappuram want to heal hearts, he also wanted to give everyone a fair chance at life.


Prolific Author and Speaker
It wasn’t enough for Dr. Periappuram to just be a doctor. He was a man with many skills. He wrote more than 100 papers for prestigious peer-reviewed journals and several books about heart surgery as part of his literary activities. He was a well-known speaker at both national and foreign events, where he shared his knowledge with everyone. His voice could be heard in more places than just the operating room. It echoed through the halls of knowledge.


A History of Awards and Honours Recognition, like an ECG reading, kept an eye on Dr Periappuram’s unwavering dedication to his work. A lot of awards and honours were given to him for his work. The prestigious Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honours, was given to him in 2018. The most prestigious award for medical success in India, the Dr. B.C. Roy Award, also found a place in his collection.
