In the world of medicine, few individuals can truly be called legends. Dr. Vijayakumar, affectionately known as the people’s doctor in Aluva, Kerala, is one such individual. As we look back on his illustrious career spanning over three decades, it becomes clear that his story is one of compassion, innovation, and relentless service.

The Beginning of an Illustrious Career

Dr. Vijayakumar’s journey in healthcare began at the Arunoottimangalam Primary Health Center in Kaduthuruthy. A native of Vadayar in Vaikom, Kottayam, he joined the Aluva Government Hospital on June 13, 1994, as a pediatrician and Resident Medical Officer (RMO). From the very beginning, Dr. Vijayakumar exhibited an exceptional commitment to his patients, a quality that would define his career for years to come.

Establishing Essential Healthcare Services

One of Dr. Vijayakumar’s most significant contributions to Aluva District Hospital was the establishment of the blood bank in 1997. His tireless efforts ensured that the blood bank became a cornerstone of the hospital’s services, providing life-saving support to countless patients. Even after his official retirement as superintendent on October 31, 2005, Dr. Vijayakumar continued to serve in the blood bank, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to healthcare.

But his contributions did not stop there. Dr. Vijayakumar was instrumental in establishing the dialysis center and the hemophilia center at the hospital. His visionary leadership and relentless pursuit of excellence transformed these facilities into vital resources for the community. Today, the dialysis unit at Aluva District Hospital is the largest in the state, and the hemophilia center remains the only one of its kind in Kerala.

A Model for the State

Under Dr. Vijayakumar’s leadership, the Aluva Blood Bank has become a model for the entire state of Kerala. While there are 16 blood transfusion centers across the state, the Aluva Blood Bank stands out as the only training center, thanks to his exceptional management and foresight. This distinction highlights the blood bank’s role not only in patient care but also in educating and training future healthcare professionals.

Continuous Service and Recognition

Despite retiring from his official duties, Dr. Vijayakumar has continued to provide invaluable service to the Aluva District Hospital. His commitment to healthcare has remained steadfast, and he continues to work tirelessly to deliver services to the community. Over the past decade, the centers he helped establish have provided comfort and care to numerous patients, earning eight international awards in recognition of their excellence.

At 71 years of age, Dr. Vijayakumar’s energy and dedication are as strong as ever. He remains actively involved in the day-to-day operations of the hospital, ensuring that the highest standards of care are maintained. His relentless pursuit of excellence and his compassionate approach to patient care have earned him numerous accolades over the years, making him a respected and beloved figure in the community.
